Why I do not Dry Clean Carpets
“Can you do dry cleaning? I only have my carpets dry cleaned because I have allergies.” I frequently get this question from people looking for carpet cleaning in Raleigh. I just tell them I don’t do dry cleaning, because I almost never have an opportunity to explain.
I would love to have the opportunity to explain that they are doing the worst thing they can for their allergies. Allergies are caused by an immune overreaction to something that has come into your body, either by skin contact (poison ivy), injection (bee sting), ingestion (medicine), or inhalation (dust mites). Most people who experience seasonal allergies or allergies only inside their homes are suffering from airborne allergens that they are inhaling.
Dry cleaning a carpet will certainly not solve this problem! Most dry carpet cleaners spread a powder over the carpet, use an electric groomer to agitate, then vacuum. Even the most powerful vacuum is not going to get all of that out of the carpet. So even if they get your carpet cleaner, they will leave behind more potential airborne allergens. And where does the dirt go? If you saw all of the dirt that comes out of my wastewater tank after a normal job, you would know that it was unlikely to fit into a vacuum cleaner.
I understand the logic behind the instinct to keep your carpets dry: some of us have had carpets cleaned so poorly that they were left soaked for days (it happened to me before I started cleaning carpets). That makes us worry about mold growing under our carpets. This is a justifiable allergy concern. However, it would take a very bad technician, underpowered equipment, or both together to leave your carpets this wet. My own system (a powerful, truck-mounted unit) leaves carpets just barely wet, and they are almost invariably dry four hours after I leave.
Nobody minds wearing clothes that have been laundered in water and detergent, and we all eat off of dishes that are cleaned with water and detergent. In fact, I’ll bet most people would be very reluctant to try a system on either that used no water and no detergent. Should we be more squeamish about our carpet, which we walk on, than we are about the clothes we wear or the utensils we put in our mouths?
I have the equipment necessary to perform dry cleaning; it would be an easy adjustment for me to make. I choose not to because it is rarely the best solution to a carpet cleaning problem. I feel good about my decision when I see my happy Raleigh carpet cleaning clients.
